Independent Work Abroad in Germany
The Independent Work Abroad Program in Germany provides work authorization for students enrolled at U.S. universities and colleges (graduating seniors may also apply). Enrolled students from Canada and non-U.S. students attending accredited U.S. colleges and universities are also eligible.
Participants find their own host companies and negotiate the terms of employment. Programs start individually, usually at the beginning of each month. Apply at least six weeks prior to your desired start date.
Program Benefits
Cultural Vistas’ Independent Work Abroad Program in Germany includes:
- Assistance during the application process
- Work authorization services
- Pre-departure information mailing
- Financial assistance through the Cultural Vistas Scholarship Fund (must apply separately)
- Health insurance (optional)
- Support throughout your program in Germany and the United States
- Re-entry information and tips on marketing international experience to U.S. employers
Eligibility
- U.S. citizens, Canadian citizens*, or non-U.S. citizens enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university for the duration of the program. U.S. citizens who will be graduating prior to the program may also apply.
- 18–30 years of age
- Basic knowledge of German (company can waive this requirement)
- Two years of university level studies, a university degree, or substantial work experience
*Canadian citizens enrolled at an accredited Canadian college or university are also eligible.
Application Deadline
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Please apply at least six weeks prior to your desired start date.

"My experience working as an intern in Madrid this summer was nothing short of lifechanging. I have a newfound awareness of myself, my country, and the world, which will continue to deepen and evolve. Leaving my internship and returning to the States, I see my future career developing before me. I now understand the workings of an NGO, and working in Public Affairs. I felt comfortable in this type of office, and really enjoyed the type of work I was doing.
After graduation, I am going to seek work once again with an NGO focused on immigration, before beginning Graduate studies in Public Affairs or International Diplomacy. Being that Spain was my first experience outside the United States, I now know I can independently travel, and want to continue."
